This is your essential guide to riding transit as a post-secondary student

A new semester, new classes, new instructors and new classmates, but still the same transition you came to trust.

We are here to support you in your journey to campus and there is no better way than beyond. This is one of the greenest ways to get around the Vancouver Metro with the SkyTrain that reduces your greenhouse gas emissions by over 99 percent compared to driving. When you choose transition, you also choose to fight the climate emergency.

Not only that, until the end of March, every trip you take goes into you TransLink’s Tap In to Win Also lotteries. You can win electric bikes, gift cards for hotel restaurants, tickets for attractions, a flight voucher and more!

So come on to ride on. Here’s what you need to know when embarking on your journey of transition and higher education.

There is a place for you

Although the rebound of Vancouver Metro passengers is among the highest in North America, it is still only about 60 percent of what it was before the COVID-19 epidemic. There is room for you in the aisle.

The buses that arrive just before when classes start at the top or bottom of the hour are the most popular. Consider taking the bus which is 10-15 minutes earlier than when you need to be on campus nearby.

More one way

Not only are post-secondary institutions learning centers, they can also be regional transition centers. This is the case for the Point University Gray Campus of the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the Barnaby Campus of the University of Simon Fraser (SFU).

Are you traveling on the Millennium Line to SFU’s Burnaby Campus? There are more ways than 143 From Burquitlam Station and 145 From Production Way – University Station. You can also catch the 144 SFU From Sperling-Burnaby Lake Station.

Same with UBC’s Point Gray Campus. Has the popular 99 B-Line and R4 41st Ave RapidBus Routes, but there are also the 84 UBC Express From the Olympic Village and VCC – Clark stations.

Sign up for public transportation alerts

From time to time, there may be changes in the transportation route. Check and sign up for public transportation alerts at translink.ca/alerts.

Whether you travel by bus, subway, SeaBus, West Coast Express or HandyDART, we will send you text messages or email updates as they occur, so you can know before you go.

Rider with confidence

Transportation remains a safe and reliable way to get around the area. Masks are mandatory transportation vehicles on board, as well as when boarding or waiting to board the system.

Between the multiple vents and the doors that often open, the ventilation in our SkyTrain buses and cars allows fresh air to circulate easily in our fleet.

Innovative pilot projects are also in progress, such as installing copper on high-contact passageways to kill bacteria.

Stage cycling with public transport

Cycling can be the fastest way to get around, especially in more urban areas. When you combine cycling with transit, you can travel even faster and faster.

One way you can ride a bike with public transportation is to ride to campus, then take a ride home like Lauren, a UBC student. Bicycles are welcome at the crossing – Including our buses, all of which are equipped with bicycle racks. Check with your school to find out what parking options are available.

You can also ride your bike to the crossing. Bicycle parking Transportation centers around the area allow you to easily connect to the SkyTrain, West Coast Express, RapidBus and other express bus routes. There is also the bicycle sharing service, Mobi by Shaw Go.

Upload your U-Pass monthly before monthly

Eligible post-secondary students can connect to the Vancouver Metro transportation system with a U-Pass BC loaded on their compass card. Contact your ticket and request a U-Pass BC every month before traveling on upassbc.translink.ca.

You can apply for the next month card on the 16th of each month or after. It can take up to 24 hours for your U-Pass BC to charge to your compass card, so please do not wait for the last minute.

Check if there is room for riding

We have formed a partnership with transition An app for testing capacity forecasts on buses so that customers can travel safely and comfortably. Transit is a popular mobile app that provides real-time information on public transportation in more than 200 cities around the world, including the Vancouver Metro.
