What is the difference between a 3PL and a freight broker?

A freight broker focuses primarily on arranging transportation capacity between shippers and carriers. A 3PL is a broader term that can include transportation but also warehousing, fulfillment, inventory management, and other supply chain functions under one contractual relationship.

How long does it typically take to onboard with a 3PL?

Onboarding timelines vary by scope. A transportation-only arrangement can often be live within a few weeks, while a warehousing or full-service rollout that includes system integration usually takes several months from contract signature to full operation.

Do small businesses use 3PLs, or is it only for large companies?

Small and mid-sized businesses use 3PLs regularly, especially for e-commerce fulfillment, shared warehousing, and access to carrier rates they could not get on their own. The deciding factor is usually complexity and growth, not company size alone.

What should be included in a 3PL contract?

At minimum, a contract should spell out the services provided, pricing structure and accessorial fees, service level expectations, liability and insurance terms, termination clauses, confidentiality, data ownership, and a clear process for changing scope or rates over time.

Can I switch 3PLs later if the relationship is not working?

Yes, but switching is rarely simple. It usually involves contract notice periods, data migration, retraining, and operational risk during the transition. Planning an exit from day one, including clear termination terms, makes any future change far smoother.
