Metro will hold the first listening sessions for the new I-710 South Corridor Task Force (Task Force 710) on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm and Thursday, December 9, 2021, starting at 5:30 pm . 10:00 to 11:30.

These sessions are designed to present information about the purpose and work of Task Force 710, and most importantly, to obtain information from community members on how task force work can best reflect their needs, goals, and priorities.

In addition, Metro will hold its third meeting of Task Force 710 on Monday, December 13, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Note that this session is virtual only due to the ongoing epidemic.

Recordings and meeting materials for Task Force 710 can be found on our Web page at https://www.metro.net/projects/i-710-corridor/, In the “Documents” section. Please follow this webpage for more information on Task Force 710.

A quick background to the new ones in the mission force:

The I-710 Corridor project was originally designed as a way to improve traffic safety, redesign highway design and adapt to growth in traffic and commodity traffic – especially from Los Angeles and Long Beach ports. This highway section was built in the 1950s and 1960s and stretched 19 miles from ports through 16 cities and communities to east Los Angeles.

The project was halted in March 2021 when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency signaled that the project would not meet federal air quality compliance standards. That he also rejected a decision to widen the highway that would displace residents and businesses in nearby localities.

In response to the EPA decision and these displacement concerns, the Metro Council in May 2021 instructed Metro to suspend work on the environmental process and reorganize local community members and stakeholders. The task force is expected to provide a multi-modal investment plan for the Southern I-710 corridor that combines feedback and community findings for the 2022 Metro Board and the State of California.

During the second meeting of Task Force 710 on November 8, 2021, the Task Force reviewed the progress made by Metro since its inaugural meeting on September 13, 2021. This review included the results of three focus groups composed of community-based organizations, school districts, and faith-based communities. Inside the hallway and designed to learn about their needs and concerns.

The main benefits of these groups were their desire to have more transparency in the process, to get adequate resources such as translated and translated materials, and Metro to increase their exposure with community members.

Reflecting the input received so far, Metro will continue to initiate effective advocacy, awareness and coordination through the partnerships formed and ongoing meetings of small groups and task force.

Metro has also committed to the public and the Metro Council to provide greater transparency and public involvement by announcing the 710th meeting dates of our task force at least two weeks in advance to provide sufficient public notice. We will also publish the agenda and other materials at least one week before the meeting (until December 6, 2021) to review the task force and the public.
