Thales announced Tuesday (October 12) that it has won a contract to modernize and standardize 1,350 tariff rates at MRT stations over the next few years.
The North-South line, East-West line, Circle line and the nearby Jurong area line will see close tariff rates provided by the company.
A $ 31.68 million contract has been awarded for Thales Fare Gates
The contract is valued at $ 31.68 million and will include the replacement of tariff rates on three existing MRT lines, i.e. North-South Line (NSL), East-West Line (EWL) and Circle Line (CCL).
Thales said it would also involve providing tariff rates for upcoming tariffs Jurong Area Line (JRL) Which will start operating in three phases from 2027 to 2029.
Travel gates to the north-south line, the east-west line and the circle line
A spokesman for the Land Transport Authority (LTA) told The Straits Times on Tuesday (October 12) that “the replacement is needed, as the tariff rates on the north-south, east-west lines and the circuit are nearing completion. Of their operational life expectancy.”
The spokesman also said that at existing tariff rates some parts are becoming “obsolete, making maintenance a challenge”.
The SGTrains team understands that most of the tariff rates used in NSL and EWL are SMRT’s TITAN Elite Series Automatic Gates, first seen since 2011.
Tariff exchange exchange works will take place during non-active hours and thus will not affect passengers.

The JRL is expected to start operating in three phases from 2027 to 2029, the JRL will also include tariff rates provided by Thales.
Similar to those used on the three existing MRT lines, the tariff rates at JRL “will come with thinner swing flaps that open in the direction of passenger travel, as opposed to the removable lines,” an LTA spokesman said.
Thales in the Singapore Railway Network
Thales products are widely used throughout the country’s railway network and are not new faces to the industry.
Both CCL and DTL currently use tariff rates made by the French supplier.
Thales has also previously been involved in re-signaling work for both NSL and EWL, where he commissioned respectively in 2017 and 2018.
The French carrier said it also shares a similar ambition with LTA “to harness the power of digital to build a safe, secure, smooth and reliable journey that includes all passengers”.
